Basketball is a game that has been around for centuries, shooting forms have developed for years and years but have you ever wondered if there is a so-called “perfect shooting form”? Well, there isn’t. But there is a way to increase the chance of making a shot, physics can help us explain why and how to do so.
When a ball leaves a player's hand three main factors will determine if the ball will go in the net or not. These factors are initial velocity, launch angle, and the force of gravity acting on the ball. By optimising all these factors we can ensure a higher chance of making the shot. Shooting with a high arc has proven to have the highest chance of getting the ball into the basket, this is because a high arc shot has a larger margin of error and allows the ball to fall right into the net without hitting the rim. This reduces the chances of the ball bouncing off the rim. Moreover, when the ball is shot with a high arc it provides a larger target area reducing the precision required for a successful shot.
A factor that most people don’t take into consideration is backspin. Most people do not realize the importance of backspin in a shot, its a factor which may seem futile however it helps you to score more consistently. Backspin helps to stabilize and reduce air resistance while the ball is in the air. This allows for a more predictable and consistent path for the ball. Moreover, backspin helps to give a favourable bounce upon hitting the rim or the backboard, this is because backspin helps the ball have a softer bounce on contact. By mastering the art of backspin, shooting can be more precise and more consistent.
Last but not least, consistency in a shot is important. By having a consistent shot form, it allows you to make more shots more consistenty. By shooting the ball thousands of times from the same spot until a reliable rythm or muscle memory is built is an important part of shooting. By attempting the same shots over and over again the muscle memory built will lead to an overall better shooting efficiency. Weather its a catch and shoot or a pull up jumper a good shooting form can significanty improve the chance of making the shot.
In conclusion, there is nothing called a perfect jumpshot, there is no way to make every single shot you take. However there is ways to optimize your jumpshot to maximize the chance of it making it in the basket. By optimizing your shooting arc, backspin and shooting form you can increase your shot making probabilities.
